The DAAl+ Alliance
Also known as the Unified National Coalition of LGBTIQ Human Rights Defenders, DAAl+ is a data-driven alliance — with RACo as a founding partner — uniting legal, health, and community expertise to protect LGBTIQ+ youth across Malawi.
The Gap We Set Out to Close
In Malawi today, LGBTIQ+ youth face a compounding crisis: family rejection, homelessness, severe mental health emergencies, and targeted violence — all within a legal system that criminalises their identity. A well-funded anti-gender movement is rolling back protections and shrinking civic space, leaving young queer and trans people isolated, without safe housing, affirming healthcare, or legal recourse.
Single-issue organisations were forced to choose between urgent relief and long-term advocacy. Those gaps in protection were too wide to ignore — together, we chose to close them.
Housing Insecurity
Many youth are displaced after family rejection
Mental Health Gaps
Severe crises, few affirming services
Legal Vulnerability
Criminalisation with no recourse
From Crisis to Power
We shifted from reacting to one emergency at a time to building a continuous pipeline that protects the whole person.
Safe Shelter
Immediate emergency housing for youth fleeing family rejection and violence.
Affirming Therapy
Peer-led psychosocial support and trauma-informed care to restore mental resilience.
Legal Clinics
Mobile legal services that document violations and defend civil rights in court.
Livelihood Pathways
Vocational social enterprises that create long-term stability and self-reliance.
The Five Pillars of DAAl+
Evidence guides every front. From data collection to lived-experience storytelling, each pillar reinforces the others so that no young person falls through the gaps.
Data & Research
Young community researchers document violations through a secure Incident Monitoring Dashboard, while open-source text mining tracks hate speech across media and social platforms to power early-warning systems.
Strategic Litigation
Verified data becomes legal action. Working with pro-bono human-rights lawyers, we file complaints and strategic suits that challenge unlawful arrests and discriminatory policies.
Health & Psychosocial Wellbeing
With mobile clinics and partners such as Network for Sex Workers Dignity (NeSeD), we audit facilities for stigma, run peer support spaces, and deliver digital mental-health networks.
Media & Digital Advocacy
Raw data becomes compelling stories. With content creators, podcasters and investigative journalists, we run evidence-based campaigns and community theatre that shift public perception.
Movement Security & Resourcing
We harden safety infrastructure against surveillance, fund long-term movement security, and channel core resources to informal, ultra-local youth groups mainstream finance overlooks.
Born From Pride
DAAl+ was forged in the streets of Lilongwe and hardened by what came next.
First Pride Parade
About 50 activists marched from Area 18 to the Civic Offices in Lilongwe — Malawi's first Pride. Public visibility sparked immediate backlash, but proved collective power.
The Protective Shield
Backlash, death threats, and digital blackmail showed a single group could not withstand coordinated retaliation. RACo and partner groups pooled security, trauma support and resources into a shared protective shield.
Evidence Over Anecdote
A petition to city and presidential officials was met with deflection. Moral appeals were failing lawmakers, so the coalition committed to replacing stories with empirical research, data mining, and policy tracking.
High Court Ruling
The June 2024 Akster ruling closed the last major judicial avenue, confirming that a permanent, data-driven alliance was the only path to lasting protection.
Five Pillars, One Movement
From emergency shelter to strategic litigation, DAAl+ defends LGBTIQ+ youth across every front — and lifts them into leadership.
Strengthen the Movement
Support the coalition's work protecting LGBTIQ+ youth through data, legal defence, and affirming care.
